Music Ministry

Choirs

At St. Luke’s, we have two groups that sing at Sunday Masses: the Choir and the Schola.

Choir

The Choir sings at the 8:30am Mass and typically practices every Tuesday at 6:30-8:00pm. Music repertoire, in addition to the Mass Ordinary and hymns, includes SATB choir selections, plainchants, and polyphony drawn from throughout the Church’s history.

Schola

The Schola sings at the 11:00am Mass and practices every Tuesday at 7:30-9:00pm, overlapping with Choir practice. The main musical focus of the Schola is on Gregorian Chant and other plainchant, especially the Propers of the Mass, but also includes other forms such as polyphony.

For Christmas and Easter, the Choir and Schola combine forces to make even more beautiful music possible.

Practices for both groups are usually held in the music office.

Cantors

Cantors proclaim the Psalm and Gospel Acclamation during Mass, as well as lead the congregation in singing the Mass Ordinary and hymns when the Choir or Schola is not present. Cantors usually sing about once per month. A beautiful and reliable singing voice is required; ability to read sheet music is ideal, though not strictly required.
